International Education Day

Happy International Education Day, students!

The first international education day was first proclaimed in 2019 by the United Nations General Assembly, meaning that today (24th January 2022) is the 3rd time the world celebrates this day! The UNGA chose this day to promote and celebrate the role of education for peace and development in order to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

It’s definitely agreeable that education is fundamental for our life. Education does not only help us to get a decent job, but also help us to evolve our ways of thinking, it allows us to see the world in a bigger picture. Thanks to technology, we can now access education more easily, anywhere and anytime online! Some even developed education start-ups to ensure that education is fairly distributed among the world’s citizens.

This year’s theme is Changing Courses, Transforming Education. The purpose of this theme is to strengthen and welcome the revival of education that was greatly affected by COVID-19 waves in the last two years. Now, a ray of hope has appeared when our generation who suffered very much doing the online curriculum period will start going to school and universities!

But, before talking about tips for the transformation of education, let’s do some throwback and appreciation on how you guys thrive for education because it’s obviously not easy, right? The spread of the virus forced you to adjust to things, like:

  • Adapting to online curriculum, eyes on screen 24/7
  • Sitting for more than 5 hours a day
  • Overlapping schedule, forcing you to multitask
  • Getting low back pain, becoming more “jompo”

That’s not all, but that’s enough to tell how hard you try for education and you need to thank yourself for trying this hard. You are AMAZING! Please appreciate yourself more, you deserve it :D.

Moving on, here’s things that you need to prepare for offline/hybrid classes

  1. Take care of your mental health

It is important to prepare your mental state so you will not feel surprised/pressured when you meet people and take classes offline.

  1. Improve your physical health

When held offline, you sure will need extra stamina and energy for transporting, meeting people, and studying because well, it’s not on your screen anymore!

  1. Practice time management, effectively

You can do this by putting all of your schedule in your calendar and arrange it neatly (maybe deadline-based) in order to prevent more than 1 (one) event at once.

  1. Learn how to study!

Yes, you need to slightly adjust your way of learning. Below are some evidence-based tips and recommendationsrecommendation to study, special for you:

  • Study actively, NOT passively!

Most of us study passively by rereading, highlighting, and summarizing notes which proved in many researches as time-wasting ways for learning. That’s why scientists do some research to find a better way of studying, obviously  with evidence. It is to actively study!

  • Flashcards
    • You can write the question on the front side and the answer on the back side of the card. It will actively recall your memory when you answer the questions.
    • You can directlystraightly check for the answer by tapping the card so it will flip to another side.
    • Some popular apps: Anki flashcards, quizlet
  • Closed-book spider diagrams or mindmap
    • Just study your book like usual. Then, make notes from it with the book closed! Preferably use the spider diagrams to make sure you understand the red line between each topic.
    • After you are done making the notes, check the book and see if there’s something you miss.
    • Redo this until there’s nothing you miss or until you think you have enough information.
  • Questions-note
    • If you love to make notes, just write them inthem but in the form of questions. That way, you will be able to actively recall information just by looking and answering the questions.
    • It’s quite similar to the Cornell note-taking systems.

That’s all! Once again, happy international day of education! Thank you for thriving and please, keep studying! Don’t forget to appreciate yourself a little more and take care of your mental health, cause you matter the most!

Oh, feel free to use the tips we’ve given you before! And be ready to rock this year!
