We all have heard about diabetes. However, is diabetes a part of your main concern?  Diabetes is a commonly known chronic metabolic disease, caused by high glucose or blood sugar level. Diabetes is classified into two types, namely type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes emerges as an inherited disease, while type 2 diabetes harms progressively. Unfortunately, lacking awareness, diabetes patients in Indonesian teenagers continue to increase. A research done by Treatment Options for Type 2 Diabetes in Adolescents and Youth (TODAY), mentioned that diabetes develops faster in adolescents than in adults or the elderly. Type 2 diabetes in adolescents generally causes complications such as heart and kidney diseases in a short period of time.

Diabetes in adolescents may be caused by lifestyle and health problems. Factors such as genetics can increase the risk of adolescents developing diabetes, However, numerous unhealthy lifestyles remain as the main culprit that causes young people to end up having diabetes. Responding to this situation, SCOPH CIMSA UPH seeks to be a reminder for teenagers by establishing an annual event called ‘World Diabetes Day’, so that before someone has to suffer from diabetes, it is very important to understand that diabetes can be prevented by adopting a few simple habits. The objective of this celebration attempts to show that teenagers can even adjust these into their everyday lifestyle, without being trapped in the image of a healthy life that sounds boring.

The World Diabetes Day celebration was held in three different interventions through an air campaign, webinar and the production of podcast.

During 4th of November 2020, the whole committee proclaimed air campaign as an acknowledgment for public society, regarding their awareness on important healthy living habits. Afterwards, on 14th November 2020, a webinar which raised the topic about “Daily Habits and Diabetes” was held for medical students. Lastly, released on 24th November 2020, was the collaboration with Sobat Diabet as our external partnership in the making of podcast, that was conducted to share experiences from a diabetes survivor.

It seems legitimate to say that teenagers still have a long time ahead of them. It would be pathetic, if the various activities and achievements they might achieve are hindered because of the risk of diabetes. Taken together, the healthy lifestyle implications done by teenagers in preventing diabetes, are the main purpose of World Diabetes Day celebration this year.
