(Young Researcher and Tobacco Free)
SCORE CIMSA-BEM KM FK UNAND
Since 2013, the prevalence of smoking among adolescents aged 10-18 years has continued to increase, namely 7.2% (Riskesdas 2013), 8.8% (Sirkesnas 2016), and 9.1% (Riskesdas 2018). In Padang, teenagers and children can buy cigarettes anywhere with ease. From the research of RUANDU 2017 on 2,026 children aged 10-18 years in Padang, it was found that 10% of elementary school students, 15% of junior high school students, and 25-30% of high school students had bought cigarettes. Many factors cause adolescents to be influenced to smoke, one of which is due to friend influences and ignorance of smoking dangers.
Therefore, WAFER SCORE takes steps to prevent an increase in the number of teenage smokers by providing education about the dangers of smoking to SCORE members and students of SMPN 7 Padang through 10 selected cadres. The series of educational activities provided by WAFER SCORE regarding the dangers of smoking will help members and students of SMPN 7 Padang better understand the dangers of smoking and get to know research activities to increase awareness not to smoke.
Pre-intervention was carried out on Friday, January 29th, 2021, to deliver material to members regarding the dangers of smoking, which was delivered by an external partner from RUANDU (Ruang Anak Dunia Foundation) and one of the CIMSA Unand alumni, dr. Khairunnisa.
Intervention 1 was carried out the next day, on Saturday, January 30th, 2021, together with ten cadres who had been selected based on the results of the previous assessment. Activities in the form of delivering material by members to cadres and having bounding activity.
Intervention 2 was carried out a week later, on Saturday, February 6th, 2021, in experimental and discussion activities. After watching an experimental video about the dangers of smoking to the body, the cadres and members conducted a joint discussion to discuss the dangers of smoking more deeply and then put the results of the discussion into a presentation.
In intervention 3, Saturday, February 20th, 2021, all cadres appeared to explain the results of their presentation regarding the dangers of smoking to students of SMPN 7 Padang (which was limited to class VIII only for some reason from the school), which was then followed by a question and answer session. Although limited to 10 minutes per presentation, the cadres were able to finish their presentation on time. The activity was closed by handing over certificates to cadres and selecting the three best young researchers.
Hopefully, WAFER can increase the knowledge of SCORE members and students of SMPN 7 Padang about the dangers of smoking will increase to reduce the number of smokers in Indonesia and increase research interest among adolescents.
