SCORA CIMSA UPH
In the 21st century where technology and access to the internet are undoubtedly in their prime, it is a bit ironic how sex education is still one of the tabooest topics in the world.
Most schools and parents try to avoid the proper, scientific ‘birds and bees' talk as much as possible, and would rather preach about abstinence; to them, knowing too much about sex will lead to promiscuous teenagers and unwanted pregnancies. However, the question ‘how much is too much?’ - or rather, ‘how much is too little?’ - still stands.
When people are only taught abstinence, they approach the idea of sex with fear and paranoia, and are susceptible to false information, not only from the internet, but also from their social circles as well. They are unaware that unsafe sexual practices not only lead to accidental pregnancies, but it also exposes them to numerous diseases.
As members of SCORA, we must abolish the stigma regarding sexual education, in hopes decrease the negative aspects (such as HIV&AIDS and unwanted teen pregnancies) brought about by unsafe sex.
We stand by our SCO’s slogan, which is, “The only way to fight AIDS is through prevention, and the only way of prevention is through education.” by holding the first Local Peer Educator Training with the curriculum of "Peer Basic Education & Comprehensive Sexuality Education with a Peer Education Approach" to enrich SCORA CIMSA UPH members in order for them to be proper peer educators.
TRAKEA (Training Kerja SCORA), a training which was held on the 21st of November 2020, aims to prepare SCORA members with knowledge regarding the different ways in which one can have safe sex and how to properly communicate this information between peers. The event was brought by a PETRA, who taught the members about the usage of various contraceptives, its benefits and side effects. There were also interactive sessions such as QnAs, games and small working groups to spice things up and help pique the members’ attention.
Since humans are naturally social and curious creatures who need to have various needs, including sexual desires fulfilled, it is best to first equip them with sufficient and proper knowledge as well as education to prevent future complications.
After all, the loss of a precious soul as a side effect of unsafe sexual practices, is a tragedy that can be prevented if only proper sexual education was widely accepted.
