(Surviving Problems on Back, Neck, and Eye during Pandemic)

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive impact on everyday life. Our regular, face-to-face offline activities switched to online ones, which directly causes an increase in digital screen time. In addition, this shift in lifestyle also causes people ???? especially those who Work From Home (WFH) and students who do virtual learning ???? to be more sedentary as they are forced to sit for long periods. As a result, this increases the risk and prevalence of neck and back pain and eye problems.

According to the assessment conducted by Newcomers CIMSA UI 2021, most of the behaviors of respondents related to back, neck, and eye health during the COVID-19 pandemic were displeasing. The average duration of daily screen time was 8.9 hours, with most respondents (83%) using their device for more than 5 hours each day. The average sitting duration in a day was 8.1 hours. Additionally, the sitting position of most respondents’ (57.3%) was not correct during online activities causing neck pain problems for students and workers.

Therefore, we aimed to raise public awareness, especially those of productive age, on maintaining and improving their back, neck, and eye health during the pandemic. We held a project on this topic that focused on introducing safe and beneficial habits that students and workers can do to alleviate their symptoms.

On 18 April 2021, Newcomers CIMSA UI 2021 held their first SPINEY project: Surviving Problems on Back, Neck, and Eye during Pandemic. SPINEY 2021 consisted of several activities.

The first webinar was about “How to Prevent Back and Neck Problems during Pandemic,” conducted by dr. Rizky Kusuma Wardhani, Sp.KFR. Then, a workshop was held that focused on stretching and how it can be applied between online activities.

The second webinar was about “How to Prevent Eye Health Problems during Pandemic,” conducted by Dr. dr. Lukman Edwar, Sp.M(K). Throughout the event, we applied the 20-20-20 rule as a direct implementation of the webinar. This rule was applied by instructing the participants to look at another object 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. At the end of the event, we announced the winners of the Non-Sedentary Challenge, a challenge on Instagram that encouraged netizens to implement an active lifestyle. There was a 30% increase in participants’ knowledge about back, neck, and eye health.
