SPEARS 1st INTERVENTION

(School Peer Educator Recruits)

SCORA CIMSA UNAIR

World Health Organization (WHO) states that adolescents are a vulnerable group facing challenges in sexual and reproductive health. In 2015, Global School Health Survey in Indonesia showed adolescents aged 12-19 have had sexual intercourse for the first time before 14. In 2018, UNESCO stated that "Young people need good-quality comprehensive sexual education" and published International Technical Guidance on Sexual Education.

Community Development "School Peer Educator Recruits" or SPEARS is carried out to succeed UNESCO discourse, support the realm of SCORA "Comprehensive Sexuality Education," and because they see the urgent need for Indonesian youth for little sexual education. Hopefully, through this program, an independent community will be formed from teenagers in high school who are engaged in reproductive and sexual education to make the Peer Education Continuum (PEC). SPEARS held five interventions, with details every month starting in November.

In the 1st Intervention, the community was given the material on "Comprehensive Sexuality Education" by Bunga Priscilla, a member of SCORA CIMSA UNAIR. The community was given a pre-test and post-test to measure their knowledge of the material. They were then challenged to debate and divided into the pros and cons team with the committee's topic. The facilitator accompanied each group to prepare the material to be presented in the debate session. In this debate session, the community presented their arguments very well. Peer educator candidates are well understood and ready to face various opinions regarding sex education, which is often considered taboo by the public.

After that, peer educator candidates have also challenged to posts two slides of Instagram Story. The first slide contains news that is happening in the community about pregnancies outside of marriage, which causes teenagers to marry early, and the second slide contains their opinion of that case. Moreover, peer educators asked their friends to give their opinion too. It is hoped that by receiving responses from several people, peer educators can share and apply the material delivered in the first Intervention. This challenge runs for seven days.

The event was closed with a group photo, and we will meet again in the next interventions with material that is no less interesting in this first Intervention! We hope that our activities can be useful and they can share with the people around them!
