SCOME and SCORP CIMSA Universitas Airlangga carried out the fifth Community Development SIGNAL (Surpassing Barrier with Sign Language) intervention on 12th November 2022, in RK Khusus Anatomi Universitas Airlangga. This intervention was attended by 24 members of CIMSA UNAIR and 23 SIGNAL community members.
SIGNAL’s fifth intervention was opened with an introduction from the Master of Ceremony and it continued by the Community Development Officer of SIGNAL, Fitri Mazia. Before the event started, participants were directed to fill out a pre-test via Google Form.
In this intervention, SIGNAL invited Ika Irawan from TIBA (Tim Bisindo dan Aksesibilitas Surabaya) as a speaker and Nur Rohimah Tisnawati as a Sign Language Interpreter. Beforehand, Mr. Wawan asked the participants to play a game. It’s like a word relay game but we do it in sign language. After the game finished, the class started with Deaf Culture Material. Followed by alphabet, introduction, days, and months topics. The participants had a chance to introduce themselves one by one in front of the class. Not only discussing the basics of sign language, but Mr.Wawan also taught us sign language in the realm of basic health such as diseases, hospitals, doctors, medicine, and so on. The participants were very active and enthusiastic during the class they asked several things to Mr. Wawan and followed his instructions to practice sign language.
Before the class ended, Mr. Wawan led the participants to play a game one more time. The game is the same game that the participant has played before the class started. But, surprisingly this time, the result was different from the pre-class game, the participants can almost perfectly imitate what Mr. Wawan shows from the first line participant until the last row participant. This happened because the participant paid attention and successfully knew the meaning of the sign language that Mr. Wawan showed.
After SIGNAL’s fifth intervention series of events were completed, the Master of Ceremony led the participants to fill out the post-test and evaluation forms. The event then closed with a fun group photo session. Hopefully, by holding this fifth intervention, attendees can understand more about sign language and be able to practice it in the future.
