SECATEEN 1st INTERVENTION
(Sexual Education for Teens)
SCORA CIMSA UGM
Adolescence is the transitional period from childhood to adulthood which involves all the development experiences in preparation for entering adulthood, including puberty. A series of changes occur when puberty results in physical and emotional changes. That is why the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has confirmed that every child has the right to receive and access appropriate sexuality education regarding health-related information. Unfortunately, based on data from the Indonesian Journal of Nursing Practice in 2017, Indonesian adolescents' knowledge regarding reproductive health is still low.
SECATEEN, Sexual Education for Teens is a community development by SCORA CIMSA UGM that aims to help adolescents gain information that seems taboo among society. For the first Intervention, SECATEEN brings a topic regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights to increase the community's awareness and knowledge.
Before doing the first Intervention, we met the 7th grade students from SMP N 4 Ngaglik for the first time during the bonding session. Due to the pandemic, we were only able to meet via Google Meet, but we still have lots of fun by getting to know each other. The ice-breaking and games session was delightful and entertaining.
To prepare for the event, we do two pre-project training. The first training was with Tabu.id, held on February 26th. In this training, we talked about puberty that happens in our body and its consent. The second training was with Rutgers WPF Indonesia, held on February 28th. We learned how to maintain healthy relationships with others. We also consult with the Student Counseling of SMPN 4 Ngaglik about our Intervention.
In the days leading up to the first Intervention, we were chattering with the students on WhatsApp. We took this opportunity by providing informative, fun facts to them.
For the first Intervention, we shared the knowledge we have accumulated from the previous training sessions. Besides, we gave some cases to discuss topics related to the topics covered in the Intervention. From this session, we were able to get an insight into their opinions and gauge how much they have learned. To keep the fun learning process exciting, we also played a couple of games with the students, such as guessing song titles and artist names.
We hope that through the bonding and intervention sessions, the community will understand more about puberty, consent, and ways to build a good relationship among peers. We wish to positively impact their lives and equip them with the knowledge that will help them as they enter adulthood.
