MEDEBATE
(Medical English Debate)
SCOPE X SCORE X SCOME CIMSA UGM
MEDEBATE, an abbreviation for Medical English Debate, was first held in 2019 to prove our belief that undergraduate students have very critical ways of thinking that could greatly impact the future of medicine. The goal of MEDEBATE is to be a media to have these voices heard.
Since there may not be a lot of places for people to state and share their opinions, we have prepared MEDEBATE as a medium to allow them to express their thoughts. By choosing debate as a way for them to express their concerns and thoughts, we are also encouraging them to be ethical and responsible to play their own parts as a team. Managed by three standing committees of CIMSA UGM (SCOME, SCOPE, SCORE), we emphasize in carrying out one of CIMSA’s vision which is empowering medical students. By doing that, we believe that we are improving the quality of health workers in the future which plays an important role in the improvement of the nation’s health.
With the advancing rate of medical technology, we used Bioethics as the theme for our debate as a means to study how healthcare decisions are made based on the principles of ethics in the field of medicine. Therefore, the participants are expected to have gained knowledge regarding the issues dealing with ethical dilemmas which will become useful in making decisions that can fulfill the needs of people everywhere.
To accomplish all the purposes stated before, we have created a three-day event consisting of Grand Lecture on the first day and an English Debate competition on the two remaining days. The Grand Lecture which focused on Bioethics was brought by Prof. Dra. Raden Ajeng Yayi Suryo Prabandari, M.Si., Ph.D. of Bioethics Department of UGM. English Debate Society of UGM also took part in this event as an adjudicator for the debate competition. All the participants from UNRI, UNS, STIKES Ajibarang, UI, and UGM competed for First, Second, and Third place as well as Best Speaker with a total prize of 5 million rupiahs.
Thanks to all the hard work, efforts, and teamwork of the official committees, seniors, mentors, and all the contributing parties which have lead to the success of MEDEBATE.
