LEOPARD (Let’s Learn Together to Prepare Research and Discover Yourself, Highschoolers!), the first intervention of CIMSA Universitas Airlangga’s new tenure, was carried out offline on Saturday, September 24th at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surabaya, which was attended by curious and enthusiastic high school students who want to dive deeper about research, SCORE CIMSA UNAIR members, as well as skilled and experienced experts as speakers.

The first intervention of LEOPARD in this tenure was opened with an introduction from the high school vice principal, Mrs. Rr. Tanti Puspitorini S.S followed by the Local Coordinator of CIMSA UNAIR, Vanessa Vania Muljo, and the Community Development Officer of LEOPARD, Nurul Zulfa.

With the main theme of the intervention being Non-Communicable Diseases, there was a pre-test carried out via Google Forms before the start of the event regarding the said theme. After the pre-test was done, our first speaker, Saraswati Retno Gumilang, who is an Advanced Public Health Leader CIMSA Certified, taught the present CIMSA members and the high school students about Non-Communicable Diseases in detail.

Next, 2 upgrading sessions were carried out. The first session was the scientific essay upgrading session carried out by Ardelia Bertha Prastika the Gold Medal Winner for PIMNAS, and the students were taught in detail how to make a good scientific essay. The second upgrading session, by Richo Andrianto the 1st Winner of HUT UKESMA Poster Design, was about Public Posters and how to utilize and maximize Canva as a medium to create them. These two sessions were also in line with the given material, which was Non-Communicable Diseases.

These upgrading sessions gave the students a head-start in the world of research and science, making them ahead of their peers with the knowledge they received from the two expert speakers. The sessions were well-received by enthusiastic students and teachers, who were brimming with questions and critiques throughout the event.

At the end of the sessions, post-tests were filled by the participants from the community as well as CIMSA members, and there was a significant increase in scores in comparison with the post-test.

We hope that in our next intervention, where the students will be taught more practically than theoretically, there will be more enthusiastic participants who are eager to learn and develop their skills, and most importantly, we hope that we can plant their love for research and its importance in the scientific and medical field.
