International Tropical Medicine Summer School (ITMSS) is the first and largest summer school activity in Indonesia. ITMSS has been carried out since 2005. This activity aims to provide an alternative forum for overseas medical students to undergo exchange programs other than internships.
The concept of activities that include formal and informal education, as well as elements of tourism and learning Indonesian culture are also accommodated by the use of this summer school system. The topic of the planned activities is not only a health problem that is typical in the tropics but also a global emerging disease because it has a broad impact not only in the health sector, but also socially and economically, so it is important to be the attention of health practitioners around the world.
The theme of ITMSS this year is ”preventive action and therapy update in tropical medicine” with the main topics are tuberculosis, leptospirosis, and diarrhea. It was held on 22-25 of August 2021 and attended by 41 international students. The event was attended by participants in the form of lectures as material delivery, tutorials used for group discussions accompanied by mini-quiz and ending with the final exam as an indicator of participants' understanding of the material that has been delivered.
Not only education about tropical medicine, but ITMSS also introduces Indonesian culture, including traditional dances and some traditional songs. For the traditional dance itself, Sentakamudya UMY performs the Anom Adhimukti dance, this dance has a meaning. The name Anom Adhimukti means youthful and vibrant, this dance describes the joy of indigenous groups in celebrating people's parties after their enthusiasm for work. difficult to do activities. In addition, there are several folk songs performed by local bands. In the non-educational activity itself, apart from being introduced to dances and songs from Indonesia, the participants were also given the opportunity to try and learn traditional dances in the cultural session.
