National Doctor’s Day or Hari Dokter Nasional is celebrated each year on the 24th of October in Indonesia. This is a special day on which the service of physicians to the nation is recognized annually. Healthcare today is more complex than ever. With more advancements, tools, and information at their fingertips doctors have an overwhelming job to diagnose and treat their patients every day. This is the day to honor the men and women who share their lives in order to extend ours, 365 days a year.

As we celebrate National Doctors Day every year on October 24, we reflect and remind ourselves on the important roles doctors play in Indonesia. They are not only hardworking people, but they also hold the responsibility of people’s lives in the palms of their hands, something that is definitely not easy on mental and physical health. To celebrate this meaningful day, CIMSA UPH’s Standing Committee on Medical Education created the event “It’s Doctor’s Day!”, a project aimed to show FK UPH students’ gratitude towards teaching as well as practicing doctors within the Universitas Pelita Harapan and Siloam Hospital Lippo Karawaci complex. Other than that, this event also aims to increase awareness regarding current issues on medicine as a profession in hopes of motivating the future clinicians to study hard during their education in order to become the very best doctors they can be.

This event was commenced in three forms. The first activity was setting up a HARDOKNAS photobooth in the FK UPH campus at Gedung Baru Fakultas Kedokteran. Many people participated in this event by taking pictures in the photobooth. The OC also gave out rose bouquets to teaching as well as practicing physicians around UPH and Siloam, as a token of gratitude from CIMSA UPH representing FK UPH’s students. SCOME members visited the doctors and gave them the bouquet then took pictures together. The Doctors responded very well to the gift and agreed that this was a touching gesture from the students. Also, all throughout the 24th of October to the 5th of November, the OC held a short essay writing competition called “MEDISCO” with three different themes of which contestants may choose one from; “The Role of Doctors in Today’s Society”, “Challenges Doctors Face Today”, and “Inspiring Figures in the Medical World”. The aim of this competition is to not only commemorate the doctor’s day in form of recognizing their service, but to also evaluate what needs to be improved in the field as well.

The OC gained much experience throughout organizing this event and the participants, both doctors and students, showed high enthusiasm as seen in their positive feedback towards the gifts and activities. As we celebrate this special occasion, we also try to evaluate our stance as medical students, or future doctors to be exact, in today’s medical world. All in all, this activity was meant to empower future medical students as according to the CIMSA Program: Human Resources for Health, as well as Health System.
