HAMTARO
SCOPH MMSA UMY
Who is the target? We are the target! This year, Public Health Committee (PHCO) MMSA UMY commemorated World TB Day and World No Tobacco Day by holding a talk show and a series of intervention of HAMTARO with the theme of "Youth Action in Smoking Cessation to Eradicate Tuberculosis”. This project is aimed to increase public awareness of the smoking trend among youth and its effect on tuberculosis.
TB is one of the deadliest infectious killers in the world, and Indonesia ranks third highest with an incidence rate of 845,000 cases in 2018. Everyone has the same risk of getting TB, but there are some conditions that make one more susceptible than others, and one of them is smoking. The Indonesian Ministry of Health said that this country faces a serious threat due to the increasing number of smokers, especially around the group of children and adolescents, as indicated by the increasing prevalence of smoking in adolescents aged 10-18 years. The increasing number of young smokers indirectly impacts the number of tuberculosis sufferers in Indonesia, 75% of whom come from the productive age group. For this reason, it is necessary to increase awareness of the dangers of smoking and its effect on tuberculosis from an early age, especially by implementing a peer education system.
HAMTARO is divided into three series of interventions and one air campaign. Starting with an air campaign in the form of a Live Instagram talk show "My TB Story" with TB Survivor from Pejuang Tangguh TB (PETA), Mr. Syarif Hidayat.
On this occasion, viewers are invited to hear about the obstacles and challenges experienced by people with Tuberculosis. Followed by the first Intervention of HAMTARO that talked about smoking cessation brought by Team Leader for Advocacy and Global Networking Program of Muhammadiyah Steps, Afriansyah Tanjung, S.H., a training on Public Speaking by PHL MMSA UMY, Hani Fakhrunnisa, and closed with a Small Group Discussion where participants are given a task to educate as many friends as they could within a week. Followed by the second Intervention that talked about Tuberculosis and presentations of students regarding the education that has been carried out.
HAMTARO was closed with a webinar with the theme "Youth Action in Smoking Cessation to Eradicate Tuberculosis'' which was delivered by a member of Indonesia Muda untuk TB, Thea Hutaman, and Youth Empowerment Officer of Lentera Anak, Rama Tantra. We hope that with the implementation of this activity, there will be more youth who have the courage and ability to educate their peers regarding the dangers of smoking and TB.
