Hello, CIMSA!
As a medical student, it is a must to learn how to do history. Anamnesis is a communication activity carried out between the doctor as examiner and the patient which aims to obtain information about the disease being suffered and other related information so that it can direct the diagnosis of the patient's disease. History is the first step to correctly diagnose our patient. There will be many patients, with different backgrounds, that we will have to work with in the future. One of them may be our deaf and mute friends out there. These differences in background should not preclude a proper history taking.
Therefore on Saturday, December 03 2022, SCOME CIMSA FK UIN SH held the first intervention for a sustainable project called ETHANOL (Empowering Medical Students' Anamnesis Skill with no Language Barrier) via offline in class learn how to communicate with sign language in our daily lives. The presenters at the event were preclinical students at the Faculty of Medicine, UIN SH who were previously trained by PUSBISINDO. The event was opened with an opening session and remarks. After that the participants were ushered into the small group room to start the next session, to carry out the next session, namely the presentation session of the first intervention material with the tutor. The material presentation session was divided into several sessions.. Finally, after the material presentation session was over, we directed the participants to the main room to play games. After the games were finished, the event was closed by the MC.
The second intervention was held on Saturday, December 09 2022. . In the second intervention, the participants learned about how to describe their physical condition such as the main symptoms, onset, specific conditions that run in the family and name of diseases. Furthermore, there was a roleplay session where participants interacted with other participants using sign language that had been taught in the previous session. After that, we gave the participants a post-assessment test to measure how far they understood the lessons taught that day.
The last intervention of ETHANOL was held on Friday, December 16 2022. As usually, the event was opened with an opening session and remarks. After that the participants were ushered into the small group room to start the next session, to carry out the next session, namely the presentation session of the first intervention material with the tutor. The material presentation session was divided into several sessions. First, we told participants to do a pre-assessment test to measure participants a basic knowledge of sign language. After that, the participants learned about sign language from the tutor. In the first intervention, the participants learned how to ask patients about past medical history, and social medical history, and review lessons from intervention 1 until intervention 3.
We got positive feedback from the participants and we had a lot of fun. Seeing the enthusiasm of the participants made this event worthy of being held at the next opportunity. Hopefully this event will really provide benefits and useful knowledge for participants and tutors.
