DEFEAT 1st Intervetion
(Dengue Fever Cessation)
CIMSA USU
On October 23rd 2021, CIMSA USU conducted the first intervention of DEFEAT (Dengue Fever Cessation) at SMA Dharma Bakti Medan. The intervention was done both online and offline. This first intervention involved teaching high school students about dengue fever, the life cycle of the vector species, how to prevent it, and how to recognize it's symptoms. The activity lasted for about 2 and a half hours, from 02.00 PM to 04.30 PM local time.
Before the intervention began, the organizing committees were given training to prepare themselves for the activity. The training was conducted on 18th of October 2021 and was given by Immanuella Stephanie Putri Simanullang, a Public Health Trainer of SCOPH CIMSA.
And then when the D-day of the intervention finally came, the offline team of the organizing committees came to SMA Dharma Bakti Medan to guide the students there and prepare the equipment to facilitate the training. The online team of the organizing committees also prepared themselves through Zoom. At 02.00 PM, participants began joining the Zoom meeting and students began arriving to school. At 02.15, the intervention was opened by MC followed by opening speeches from the local coordinator of CIMSA USU, Project Officer, and the principal of SMA Dharma Bakti Medan. Then, all the participants were given a pre-test, and then proceeded with a material presentation by dr. Sri Amelia, M.Kes from the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine USU. At the end of the presentation, participants were given a post-test, and then followed by an ice breaking session. Next, the participants were mobilized to a small working group (SWG) of 3 to 4 people, as a doctor, patient, and the head of neighborhood to discuss a case of poor sanitation, presence of multiple water puddles, and an increasing case of high fever among children in a neighborhood. Each group of SWG then presented their roleplay in front of everyone.
After the intervention, we found that based on the pre-test and post-test given, there was an increase of knowledge among the students, given by the fact that there was an increase in average points 14,58%. We also conducted a follow up method by giving a video assignment. Based on the evaluation form given at the end of the activity, all the students also felt like they will join in on the next intervention.
