In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and plastic are very important. But behind all these things, are we not aware of the effect it has on our environment? Are we responsible enough to use it?

In fact, during the COVID-19 pandemic there was a significant increase in plastic waste. In addition, according to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry during the pandemic, medical waste increased by 30% -50%. In fact, throughout 2020, West Sumatra produced 91.05 tons of medical waste consisting of PPE and household waste.

Due to the urgency above, SCORP CIMSA-BEM KM FK Unand held an activity, namely DAISY (Don't Waste Your Plastic and Mask) as well as in celebration of the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction which falls on October 13. DAISY raised the theme “Household Plastic and Medical Waste and Its Impact on the Environment”.

DAISY consists of several interesting series of events. The first series is a pre-activity training that will be held on September 18, 2021. The training is divided into 2 topics, where the first training is delivered by Bebas Sampah Indonesia on “Household Plastic and Medical Waste”. While the second training was delivered by CHRT on "Preventive Actions for Natural Disasters". This training is aimed at members of SCORP CIMSA-BEM KM FK Unand. It is hoped that through training, members will be equipped with current household medical and plastic waste management as one of the preventive measures for related natural disasters such as floods.

The next series is a webinar held through Zoom Meeting and Live Streaming Youtube on October 2, 2021. This webinar is addressed to the general public with the title "Plastic and Household Medical Waste during a Pandemic" and speakers from Zero Waste Indonesia. Through the webinar, resource persons explained how to reduce and manage plastic and medical waste. It is hoped that every material in this webinar can be applied by participants.

As the closing and culmination of the IDDRR celebration, we held a series of air campaigns which were distributed through the CIMSA-BEM KM FK Unand Instagram account and members. First, we published an educational video in collaboration with Bebas Sampah Indonesia  entitled "How to Manage Medical and Plastic Waste" on October 13, 2021. Next, on October 14-15 2021, infographics and the challenge "How to Manage Mask Waste Independently" were distributed via Instagram stories.

It is hoped that through this activity members and the public can be more aware of plastic and medical waste during the pandemic and apply good management so that our environment is protected. Let's also protect the environment when we protect ourselves in the midst of a pandemic and make every plastic waste we have valuable!!
