Indonesia is one of the countries most prone to natural disasters. Indonesia, which consists of a group of islands, has a very high potential for disasters and also varies greatly in terms of types of disasters. Jember Regency itself is one of the regencies in East Java that is prone to disasters because it is prone to landslides and has high rainfall and is located close to the foot of Mount Raung. Jember Regency has several sub-districts that are prone to floods and landslides.
Disaster risk reduction is an action that can be taken to reduce the impact of a disaster which includes prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and reconstruction efforts. Preventive and promotive handling in disaster management work patterns is in the pre-disaster stage. This pre-disaster stage is the capital in dealing with disasters and post-disasters.
SCORP CIMSA UNEJ held an activity called CARES (CIMSA Reduces Disaster Risk) because disasters that often occur in Jember have a lot of potentials to be prevented compared to other natural disasters. This is a concern for us to carry out activities in the form of planting trees together as a disaster prevention measure. This activity was also to conduct a campaign to celebrate International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) on October, 13th 2022.
CARES activities are held for about three days. The first activity was a social media campaign. On October, 13th 2022, we shared infographics on Instagram and on October, 17th 2022 we also shared some quizzes on Instagram too. On October, 14th 2022 we held a pre-activity training about flood prevention efforts from the Zoom meeting. The speaker was Denny Christian (CIMSA Certified Trainer). And on October, 15th 2022 SCORP CIMSA UNEJ in collaboration with KORREK UNEJ (Korps Relawan Kampus UNEJ) and DESTANA (Desa Tanggap Bencana) Panti planted trees. In total, we planted 30 mahogany tree seedlings in the orphanage village. Overall, the CARES (CIMSA Reduces Disaster Risk) went well.
