Hello, CIMSA!

As part of prospective health workers, it is crucial for us to maintain effective communication among patients, colleagues, and the communities. This is beneficial for us as maintaining effective communication could help us serve the community right, being able to meet the needs of the people around us, yet still being able to not overworked ourselves. Effective communication itself refers to the ability to exchange ideas, thoughts, and opinions so that the message brought is received with clarity and in a level where it is understandable.

People with disabilities, in this case, people with hearing impairment, are still struggling to communicate everyday even in the midst of emergencies. This communication difficulty is one of the major urgency for us health science students to learn how to effectively communicate with our patients with hearing impairment, as the settings of our working environment are constantly in an emergency state.

Due to this urgency, and in addition to celebrate ‘Hari Tuli Nasional 2023’ or National Deaf Day 2023 that falls on 11 January 2023, SCOME x SCORP CIMSA UPH intend to facilitate health science students in learning Indonesian sign language (BISINDO: Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia) to be able to communicate with patients with hearing impairment, and in order to empower medical students by providing a learning facilities for medical students like us. SCOME x SCORP CIMSA UPH instigated that as the future generation of health science workers, we will be bound to improve the effective communication among patients and health workers in order to improve the nation’s health by focusing on the human rights equality for vulnerable people.

Break The Silence: Words in Silence (BTS: WISE) engaged the participants in a main event that was held on 19 February 2023. The event was held in the GBFK UPH (UPH’s Health Science building) with a series of agenda that include a seminar brought by dr. Niken Ageng Rizki, Sp THT-KL. The seminar brought by dr. Niken focuses on ‘deafness in the medical perspective’, in which dr. Niken enlightened the participants about deafness in the field of medicine. Lanter, the agenda was followed by a workshop that focuses on learning Indonesian sign language by Bapak Iwan Satriyawan Setyohadi from Pusat Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (PUSBISINDO). He was supported by the help of Pusat Layanan Juru Bahasa Indonesia (PLJ) as the translator from sign language to Bahasa Indonesia and vice-versa.
