(Breaking The Silence)

SCOME CIMSA UI

On September 5th 2020, SCOME CIMSA UI held its 2nd intervention of community development. “Breaking the Silence” (BTS) was the name of the community development. Breaking the Silence is an Indonesian Sign Language training for medical students of Universitas Indonesia collaborating with Pusat Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (PUSBISINDO). The event was held online via Zoom Meeting as our platform due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The materials taught on the 2nd intervention of Breaking the Silence were about Indonesian Sign Language for days, months, and time. All participants were divided into three classes (breakout rooms) and each class has their own trainer from PUSBISINDO. The trainings were held interactively between the trainers and the participants. The trainers for the 2nd intervention of Breaking the Silence were Mr. Agus Subroto, Mr. Iwan Satriyawan Setyohadi, and Ms. Isro’ Permata Sari

the enthusiasm of the participant during the training

All participants of the 2nd intervention of Breaking the Silence were very eager to learn and very enthusiastic as well throughout the training. The mean between participants’ pre-test and post-test grades was very different because the mean increased drastically from 20 (pre-test) to 87.62 (post-test). Beside that, most of the participants (64%) got the perfect grade (one hundred) in their post-test. This occasion showed us that most of the participants had their knowledge leveled up and they understood all the materials taught despite being held online for the first time.

The satisfaction questionnaires were also given to participants in order to evaluate the 2nd intervention of Breaking the Silence and to make it better for the next intervention. The results from this questionnaires showed that the 2nd intervention of Breaking the Silence was successfully done because most of the participants satisfied with the training. The mean grades for “the training was held on time” is 3.88/4, the mean grades for “each agenda had enough time allocation” is 3.88/4, the mean grades for “the method of the training was very good” is 3.71/4, and the mean grades for “the committee’s performance on the training was  very good” was 3.76/4. All these grades told us that the 2nd intervention of Breaking the Silence was done very well.

However, there are still more evaluations from the participants that we look up to for the next interventions. Some participants suggested the hiring of translators for each room(s), to be helpful for participants with connection problems, to obligate all participants to unmute their microphones during the training, and to provide the words via chat or slides while the trainers demonstrate the words using Indonesian Sign Language. Hopefully, the good things from of the 2nd intervention of Breaking the Silence could be maintained, and some parts that weren’t good enough could be evaluated and be better in the next interventions
