On August 31st, 2024, MSCIA UB’s COMDEV BREATH project organized a pivotal event at RW 9 in Kauman Village, Malang City, to address the pressing issue of ISPA (Infeksi Saluran Pernapasan Akut), or Acute Respiratory Infection. ISPA is notably prevalent in Malang City, making it one of the most common respiratory health concerns in the area. This high incidence underscores the urgent need for effective public health education and intervention.
The COMDEV BREATH project represents MSCIA UB’s inaugural community development initiative aimed at tackling health issues through grassroots engagement. The event's primary objective was to raise awareness and understanding of ISPA among local residents. Given Malang City's densely populated neighborhoods and varying access to healthcare, the prevalence of ISPA highlights the need for proactive community education on respiratory health.
Held at RW 9, the event featured a variety of activities designed to engage and inform the community. It began with group exercises that served not only as a physical activity but also as a reminder of the importance of maintaining good health to prevent respiratory infections. This was followed by informative presentations that covered ISPA’s definition, symptoms, potential adverse effects, and prevention strategies.
These presentations were tailored to be clear and accessible, ensuring that attendees of all ages could easily understand and apply the information. Experts provided practical advice on reducing the risk of ISPA through proper hygiene, vaccination, and environmental management. This approach aimed to empower residents with the knowledge and tools needed to protect their health and well-being.
Interactive games were incorporated to make learning enjoyable and memorable. These activities helped reinforce key messages about ISPA in a fun and engaging way, keeping participants involved and attentive throughout the event.
The positive feedback from attendees highlighted the success of the event, reflecting the community’s appreciation for the informative and interactive nature of the sessions. The smooth execution and enthusiastic participation are promising signs of the event’s potential long-term impact on community health.
MSCIA UB’s COMDEV BREATH project aims to build on this success by continuing to promote health awareness and education in Malang City. By addressing the high prevalence of ISPA through community-driven initiatives, the project aspires to foster a healthier, more informed population and contribute to overall improvements in respiratory health.
