BCAM 2020
(Breast Cancer Awareness Month)
SCORA CIMSA-BEM KM FK UNAND
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a campaign held annually in October. It helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection, and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease. Despite all great progress made in breast cancer detection and treatment in last few decades, this disease stays a growing global health threat to humanity.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer and also the leading cause of cancer mortality in women worldwide. In 2018, an estimated 2.1 million women were newly diagnosed with breast cancer, approximately one new case diagnosed every 18 seconds, additionally 626.679 women with breast cancer died. In developed countries, 1 in every 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The International Agency for Research on cancer predicts that the number of breast cancer cases will grow by 63% worldwide by 2040.
The breast cancer incidence rate which shows an increase, is believed to be related to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Any risk of breast cancer in women can have a higher or lower probability, depending on several factors, which include reproductive factors (early menarche age, first pregnancy at an advanced age, low parity, lactation period), endocrine factors (oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, more than 75 years of age with a breast density of 75%, atypical hyperplasia), dietary factors like alcohol consumption, obesity, and genetic factors as family members with breast cancer, and family history of ovarian cancer.
Awareness of the symptoms and the need for screening are important ways of reducing the risk. So, SCORA CIMSA-BEM KM FK UNAND actively participated in promoting the importance of awareness of breast cancer through webinar with the theme ‘Early Detections and Survivor Stories in COVID-19 Pandemic’ on Sunday, 25th October, 2020.
This webinar is a one day event and opened for public from all around Indonesia. On this event, we invited speakers from Perhimpunan Ahli Bedah Onkologi Indonesia (PERABOI) and breast cancer survivors from Lovepink.
We hoped by holding a webinar of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, people will be more aware of breast cancer and its prevention. Because we believe that early detection is the best protection.
