ABC 2nd INTERVENTION

(AKU, BUMI, DAN CINTA)

SCORP CIMSA UI

ABC: Aku, Bumi, dan Cinta is a community development event to commemorate Earth Day every year held by SCORP. The main themes that we bring to ABC this year are environmental issues with the topic of climate change, greening, the movement of less waste through recycling and reducing the use of plastics.

The second intervention provides insight into less waste behavior and the practice of reusing and recycling plastic bottle waste and was done on Sunday, the 11th of April 2021. Following our previous topic, in this intervention we focus on one of the causes of climate change. Plastic bags are one of the main causes of climate change. Starting from the production process to the disposal and management stage, plastic waste emits a lot of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Based on data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry issued in 2016, every year Indonesia produces around 9.85 billion pieces of plastic bag waste every year. Based on the online community assessment we distributed in March 2021 to Lio Village residents, from 49 respondents, 44.9% uses plastic bags and other one time-use plastics every day and only 18.4% scarcely uses any plastic. However, many have stated that they’ve tried reducing the use of plastics through shopping bags usage (83.7%). Besides this, there were only 55.1% of the respondents that are aware of 3Rs, though most of those that stated “aware”, not many knew the full three of the Rs. This shows that the respondents have not fully comprehended the methods on how to reduce plastic usage.

The second intervention also shared educational infographics regarding the current condition of plastic waste in Indonesia, its impacts, and methods to reduce them. The main event was the explanation and a two-way discussion between our resource person and the Lio community regarding waste disposal and waste reduction. To bond and keep our participants engaged, besides the interactive discussion, we conducted fun games as a method of ice breaking. Pre and posttest has been distributed as an instrument to assess our impact and increase of knowledge in the community. Overall, the event runs smoothly and the participants were very enthusiastic and open to how plastic waste has been an integral part of their lives and how it heavily impacts the environment. We successfully create a 16.32% increase in knowledge seen through the average score difference between the pre and posttest. Based on the feedback form submitted by the attendees, there was an average 3.63 out 4 points of increase in understanding and knowledge.
