INTERVIEW

Intan : How are you doing, Kak Helmi? What’s your current activities? Kak Helmi : Hi Intan!! I am doing great. I hope you are too! Now I am enjoying working in 2 provinces (Jakarta & Banten) and studying in two countries (Indonesia & the Netherlands)
Intan : Could you tell me more about your job? Kak Helmi: Now I am working as an anesthesiologist at Grha Kedoya Hospital, West Jakarta and at a private hospital in Tangerang. I am also studying a long distance PhD program with the Department of Intensive Care, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. And every week, I go to Bandung for my consultant specialist program in Intensive Care, at Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung.
Intan :  Kak Helmi, you used to study in the Netherlands, can you tell me more about your experience there? Kak Helmi: More precisely in the process of, cause in truth I haven’t finished yet. Actually this interest began because of CIMSA, where we start to be exposed to the international atmosphere, when a time where being an exchange student is already too mainstream, why not go higher, studying abroad. Alhamdulillah, I received a full scholarship for a 3 year stay at Holland. It’s just considering that the Indonesian Doctor’s certificate’s validity is 5 years, and then it required me to come back to Indonesia to practice so that I can renew the certificate. So for the time being, I am doing a long distance study for my PhD.
Intan : Is it difficult for Indonesian medical students to continue their studies abroad? Can you tell us more about the process? Kak Helmi : Well in truth it depends on what program you want to take. Being a doctor you have two paths for your career. You can choose either one or both of them (as I am doing now). The first path is the academic path (Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate). This program is relatively easy if you want to study abroad. Because the requirements to apply are standard like academic background, english competence, and money (scholarship). Scholarships for medical students are also highly variable.
Second path is the professional path (GP, specialist, and consultant). This path needs careful consideration because not all countries allow Indonesian doctors to continue their specialist or consultant education there. Applicants from Indonesia must restudy, which includes a written test and practice, also have to be fluent in their local language.
Of course, there are exceptions where foreign doctors can continue their specialist education. But remember, only for rare specialist programs.
More than that, before deciding to continue professional education abroad, we have to consider whether we will be going back to Indonesia after graduation. Because Indonesia will also carry out readjustment for those that hold foreign certificates.
That means when we continue professional education abroad, we might get better education, but we will lose a lot of time, money, and energy. You decide.
Intan : Do you have any influential people affecting your life or your career? A mentor?
Kak Helmi : Yes I do. There is a teacher at Dr. Sardjito Hospital that keeps pushing me to surpass him. And also, encouragement from my parents and family are also great. Most of my family isn’t highly educated (my late Father didn’t graduate primary school, my mother only graduated middle school, and my brothers & sisters graduated high school). This encourages me to keep going forward while carrying my family name.
Intan : What is your aspiration for CIMSA today?
Kak Helmi :I really want to contribute to advancing clinical research in Indonesia. There are a lot of research areas that are very interesting to do that can promote Indonesia.
Intan : You used to hold a position in IFMSA as SCOPE-D Assistant, can you tell more about it? Kak Helmi : Yes. I think maybe the SCOPE-D Assistant at that time has a similar job as the SCOPE Regional Assistant now. That coordinates SCOPE for Asia & Oceania.
Intan : According to Kak Helmi, does being a part of CIMSA can support your career in the future?
Kak Helmi:It surely does! Joining any organization will nurture a mindset to manage, discuss, debate, and express your opinions. While CIMSA specifically contributed extra with the networking to international level.
Intan : For this last question, I will ask for your message for all CIMSA Member. Kak Helmi : Being a part of CIMSA, and being active together is surely fun, and very helpful for the future. Make use of your time with CIMSA, be Active, be Creative, Grow, and Promote Indonesia in the eyes of the world. Success for all of us!
